Ancient Roman The Diana of Versailles (or Artemis of Versailles) is a 2-meter Roman marble depicting the goddess of the hunt striding forward, reaching for an arrow in her quiver with one hand while a leaping deer stands at her side. It's a 1st or 2nd century CE copy of a lost Greek bronze attributed to Leochares (c. 325 BCE).
Pope Paul IV gave it to King Henry II of France in 1556. It was displayed at Versailles before moving to the Louvre, where it remains today. The dynamic pose and flowing drapery make it one of the finest surviving images of the goddess.
