by Constantin Brâncuși, 1932
Bird in Space (1932-40) by Constantin Brancusi is a polished brass sculpture on a limestone base, standing 151.8 cm tall. This work belongs to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
Brancusi created 16 versions of this sculpture between 1923 and 1940, working in both bronze and marble. Rather than depicting a specific bird with wings and feathers, the artist focused entirely on the essence of flight itself. The streamlined, elongated form tapers to a fine point, suggesting upward motion and weightlessness.
The limestone base functions as an organic, irregular stem that anchors the soaring brass form to the earth. Brancusi polished the metal extensively until its materiality dissolves into reflective luminosity. In 2005, one version of Bird in Space sold for $25.8 million at auction, setting a record price for sculpture at the time.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
