Chaim Soutine transformed a simple still life into an emotionally charged composition with this painting of herrings and a straw-wrapped Chianti bottle. His thick, agitated brushwork gives the silvery fish an almost living energy, their bodies twisting across the canvas. The deep reds of the wine bottle add warmth to the otherwise muted palette of grays and browns.
Soutine was a Lithuanian-born artist who became central to the School of Paris, the loose community of international artists working in Montparnasse. He painted food subjects obsessively throughout his career, from hanging beef carcasses to plucked poultry, bringing an Expressionist intensity to the centuries-old tradition of still life painting. His turbulent handling of paint later influenced Abstract Expressionists and Francis Bacon. This painting remains in a private collection, prized by collectors for its raw emotional power and characteristic Soutine energy.
