by Claude Monet
French artist Claude Monet painted this luminous Mediterranean view during his productive 1888 stay in Antibes on the French Riviera. The composition shows the brilliant blue waters of the sea stretching to the horizon, with the snow-capped Maritime Alps visible in the hazy distance. A wind-bent pine tree frames the scene, its dark foliage contrasting dramatically with the vivid azure of sky and water.
Monet produced about 30 paintings during his Antibes visit, captivated by the intense southern light so different from his usual Normandy subjects. The brilliant colors and crystalline atmosphere challenged his Impressionist techniques, pushing him toward bolder, more saturated hues than he typically used. This work now belongs to the Courtauld Gallery in London, which holds outstanding Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.
