Claude Monet painted the Mediterranean view in 1888 during a stay on the French Riviera. A single maritime pine leans across the foreground, framing the distant Estérel Mountains across the Gulf of Antibes. The warm southern light differs dramatically from his familiar northern landscapes, pushing Monet to capture new atmospheric effects.
Monet created numerous Antibes paintings during this trip, exploring the region's brilliant blue waters and golden light. He wrote to Alice Hoschedé that the colors were so intense they seemed unreal. These Mediterranean works demonstrate Impressionism's adaptability to different climates and lighting conditions.
