by Claude Monet
This painting by Claude Monet view of Waterloo Bridge during his London series between 1900 and 1904. Thick fog shrouds the bridge's arches in shades of blue and grey. The atmospheric conditions fascinated Monet, who worked on multiple canvases simultaneously from his room at the Savoy Hotel.
The London series includes 41 Waterloo Bridge paintings plus views of Charing Cross Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. Legendary collector Ivan Morozov acquired this work, which later entered the State Hermitage Museum collection. Monet's loose brushstrokes capture fleeting light effects rather than architectural details.
