Francesco Guardi captured Venice's famous Piazza San Marco with his characteristically loose, atmospheric touch. The basilica's domes and Gothic architecture rise against a luminous sky while tiny figures animate the square. Guardi's sketchy brushwork conveys the shimmer of Venetian light on stone.
Guardi specialized in vedute (views) of Venice, painting the city with more freedom than his rival Canaletto. His painterly technique anticipated later developments in landscape painting. Now at the National Gallery in London.
