Francisco de Zurbaran executed this portrait of Fra Francisco Zumel, exemplifying his reputation as the "painter of monks." Zurbaran earned this nickname through his many paintings of friars, nuns, and saints for the churches and religious orders of Andalusia. His approach gave saints and monks an almost sculptural presence.
Zurbaran's technique drew comparisons to Caravaggio, particularly his forceful use of chiaroscuro (dramatic light and shadow). His white draperies were especially celebrated. The Carthusian houses, with their white-robed monks, are particularly abundant in his paintings. He rendered the minutiae of religious dress with notable verisimilitude.
The portrait is held at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Zurbaran's religious portraits capture not merely physical likeness but the spiritual intensity of monastic devotion in Counter-Reformation Spain.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
