by Hans Memling
Hans Memling painted the portrait of Jacques of Savoy, Count of Romont, in the 1470s. The Flemish master captured the French nobleman with the precise realism characteristic of the Northern Renaissance. Jacques is dressed in Burgundian court fashion, wearing the emblem of the Order of the Collar of Savoy around his neck, confirming his noble lineage.
Memling was the leading painter in Bruges after Jan van Eyck's death, producing portraits prized throughout Europe for their delicate detail and rich textures. His technique with oil on oak panel allowed for fine rendering of fabrics, jewels, and flesh tones. Jacques of Savoy was a prominent military leader in the Burgundian Wars.
The portrait hangs at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland. Memling's work can also be seen at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery in London.
