This terracotta head from the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) depicts a Chinese dignitary or court official. The Yuan dynasty was established by Mongol ruler Kublai Khan after conquering the Song dynasty, creating a period of intense cultural exchange between Chinese and Central Asian traditions. Terracotta figurines depicting various social classes served as tomb furnishings, placed alongside the deceased to provide companionship and service in the afterlife.
Chinese tomb figurines ranged from dignitaries and officials to servants, entertainers, and soldiers. This head shows individualized facial features rather than generic idealization, reflecting Yuan-era artistic preferences. The piece is at the Art Institute of Chicago.
