This painting by Jacob Jordaens warm, intimate scene of the Holy Family gathered with Elizabeth and the young John the Baptist. The Flemish Baroque master captured a tender moment as the two cousins, Jesus and John, are introduced. John clutches his reed cross, his symbol as the future prophet who would baptize Christ.
Jordaens often drew inspiration from Caravaggio, particularly the motif of the Christ Child standing on his mother's lap. The artist infused his religious paintings with the same earthy naturalism that defined his secular works. Elizabeth, John's elderly mother, watches protectively while the Virgin Mary gazes outward, meeting the viewer directly.
The infant John wears a camel-skin garment, foreshadowing his later life as a desert prophet. A lamb appears beside him, symbolizing his famous identification of Jesus as the "Lamb of God." This painting hangs at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
