Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla painted this portrait in 1886, capturing a young woman wearing the traditional Ciociaro costume from Italy's Ciociaria region. The work shows Sorolla developing the luminous brushwork and fresh color that would make him one of Spain's most celebrated painters. Though now famous for sun-drenched beach scenes, his early career included many figure studies like this one.
The painting measures 41 x 59 cm and demonstrates Sorolla's ability to capture natural beauty with seeming effortlessness. The Italian subject reflects his travels and artistic training outside Spain during his formative years. He would later return repeatedly to themes of Mediterranean light and coastal life that defined his mature work.
This portrait is held in a private collection. Major holdings of Sorolla's work can be found at the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, the Hispanic Society of America in New York, and various Spanish institutions.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
