British artist Joshua Reynolds painted this portrait of Clotworthy Skeffington, who later became the 1st Earl of Massereene. Reynolds was the leading portrait painter of 18th-century England and first president of the Royal Academy.
His portraits typically combined elegant poses with references to classical art, lifting his sitters to heroic status. This work remains in a private collection.
