Pierre Bonnard captured this intimate street scene showing a young woman with an umbrella. The work demonstrates Bonnard's distinctive approach to color and light, with soft, diffused tones that blur the boundary between figure and background.
As a founding member of Les Nabis, Bonnard developed a style that combined Japanese print influences with Impressionist color theory. The painting's flattened perspective and decorative patterns reflect the Nabis' belief that a painting should be primarily a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order. Bonnard's later works would push even further into vibrant color harmonies.
