Ancient Egyptian The Zodiac of Dendera is a sandstone ceiling depicting the night sky as ancient Egyptians understood it around 50 BCE. The circular relief shows constellations including recognizable zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio) alongside traditional Egyptian sky figures. Carved during the Greek-influenced Ptolemaic period, it represents a unique fusion of Mesopotamian, Greek, and Egyptian astronomical traditions.
French engineers removed the zodiac from the Temple of Hathor at Dendera in 1821, sawing it from the ceiling with gunpowder-assisted cuts. The controversial extraction sparked early debates about cultural property that continue today. Modern scholars use the zodiac to study ancient astronomical knowledge, though attempts to date the temple from star positions have proven unreliable.
The Louvre displays the zodiac in its Egyptian galleries, one of the most significant astronomical artifacts from the ancient world.
