José Benito Ortega (1858-1941) was a New Mexican santero who carved wooden religious figures (santos) for rural churches and households in northern New Mexico. His distinctive, folk-style bultos and retablos served communities without regular access to priests, keeping Catholic devotional traditions alive in the American Southwest.
