Jean-Dominique Rachette (1744-1809) was a French-born sculptor who became the chief modeler at Russia's Imperial Porcelain Factory in Saint Petersburg from 1779. Born in Montpellier, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and the Royal Academy in Paris before working in Denmark, Hamburg, and Berlin.
Rachette's most significant achievement was the "People of Russia" series, inspired by ethnographer Johann Gottlieb Georgi's book on the peoples of the Russian Empire. Running from 1780 to 1804, this ambitious porcelain series depicted the diverse ethnic groups of Russia. He was awarded the title of Academician in 1785 and professor of sculpture in 1800. Our collection includes 3 works at the Art Institute of Chicago.
