The workshop of Andrea della Robbia was one of the most productive sculptural enterprises in Renaissance Florence, specializing in glazed terracotta devotional art. Andrea (1435-1525) expanded the technique invented by his uncle Luca della Robbia into a large-scale commercial operation, producing blue-and-white Madonnas, altarpieces, and architectural decorations for churches across Italy.
Workshop pieces follow Andrea's established formulas but may have been executed by assistants, including his sons Giovanni, Luca II, and other trained craftsmen. The consistent quality of the glazing technique made della Robbia products recognizable and popular, though distinguishing Andrea's own hand from workshop production can be challenging.
