The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki opened on February 17, 1888, making it the oldest purpose-built art gallery in New Zealand. Founded with collections donated by Governor Sir George Grey and businessman James Tannock Mackelvie, it initially shared its building with the Auckland public library.
The collection now holds over 15,000 works spanning the Middle Ages to the present, with strength in New Zealand and Pacific art alongside European painting. A major renovation completed in 2011, designed by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp and Archimedia, expanded the gallery with a dramatic canopy of kauri wood forms. The Chartwell Trust has been a major contemporary art donor, shifting the gallery's emphasis from its original 19th-century European focus toward New Zealand and international modern art.
