The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, was founded in 1919 by industrialist Joseph G. Butler Jr. and is the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to American art. The McKim, Mead and White-designed building opened to the public that same year.
The collection focuses entirely on American painting, sculpture, and works on paper, from colonial times through the present. Winslow Homer's Snap the Whip is the museum's most famous painting. Works by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, Mary Cassatt, and Edward Hopper span the breadth of American art history. Admission is free.
