The Château de Compiègne in northern France served as a royal and imperial residence from the Middle Ages through the Second Empire. The current neoclassical palace was largely rebuilt under Louis XV between 1751 and 1788, designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel.
Napoleon I and Napoleon III both used Compiègne as an autumn residence, and the interiors preserve First Empire and Second Empire furnishings. The palace complex includes the National Museum of the Car and Tourism, one of France's premier automobile collections. The surrounding forest of Compiègne, once a royal hunting ground, stretches over 14,000 hectares.
