The Château de Versailles began as a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623 and was transformed into a palace of staggering scale under Louis XIV between 1661 and 1715. The Sun King moved the French court here in 1682, making Versailles the seat of political power until the Revolution in 1789.
In 1833, King Louis-Philippe converted the palace into a museum of French history.
