The Duomo di Siena (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) is one of Italy's most ornate medieval cathedrals, built between the 12th and 14th centuries. The exterior alternates bands of dark green and white marble in the distinctive Sienese style. Inside, the marble floor is the cathedral's greatest treasure: 56 panels of biblical and allegorical scenes by various artists, worked on from the 1370s to the 1540s. It's one of the most elaborate cathedral floors ever created.
The cathedral holds sculptures by Michelangelo, including early works made for the Piccolomini Altar when he was in his twenties. Nicola Pisano's carved marble pulpit (1268) is a masterwork of medieval sculpture. The Piccolomini Library, off the left aisle, contains Pinturicchio's vivid frescoes of Pope Pius II's life. The nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo holds Duccio's Maestà, Siena's most important painting.
