The E.G. Bührle Foundation in Zürich was established in 1960 to display the art collection of Emil Georg Bührle (1890-1956), a German-born industrialist who made his fortune in arms manufacturing. Between 1936 and 1959, Bührle assembled 203 paintings with a focus on French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
The collection includes works by Cézanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas. In 2008, four paintings (including a Monet and a Cézanne) were stolen in one of Switzerland's largest art heists; all were eventually recovered. In 2021, most of the collection moved to the Kunsthaus Zürich's new extension. The provenance of several works, acquired during World War II, has been the subject of ongoing scrutiny.
