The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig (Brunswick) was founded in 1754, making it one of the oldest public museums in continental Europe. Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel assembled the core collection in the early 18th century, acquiring paintings, prints, and applied arts on a grand scale.
The collection holds roughly 4,000 European paintings, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, and Cranach. Vermeer's Girl with a Glass of Wine is among the most celebrated holdings. A six-year renovation completed in 2016 modernized the galleries while preserving the classical building. The print room contains over 100,000 sheets.
