The Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is a universal museum founded in 1820, combining art, natural history, and geology under one roof. The collection originated with the art cabinet of Landgrave Ludwig V of Hesse-Darmstadt.
The art holdings include medieval panel paintings, Cranach, Rubens, and one of the world's most important collections of works by Joseph Beuys, donated by the artist's collector Karl Ströher. The Block Beuys, seven rooms of Beuys installations, is the largest single collection of his work anywhere. Natural history galleries feature fossils from the nearby Messel Pit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
