The Kunsthalle Bremen is one of Germany's oldest civic art museums, founded by private citizens in 1823. Unlike state-run museums, it's still operated by the Kunstverein (art association), making it one of the few major German galleries funded primarily by membership and donations. The collection covers European painting and sculpture from the 14th century to the present, with special depth in German art.
Highlights include Max Liebermann's The Parrot Walk and works by Albrecht Dürer. The print and drawing cabinet holds over 220,000 works on paper, one of Germany's largest such collections. The Expressionist holdings are strong, with works by Paula Modersohn-Becker, who worked nearby in the artists' colony of Worpswede. A 2011 renovation added modern gallery wings to the original neo-Renaissance building.
