The Musée de Picardie in Amiens is one of the first purpose-built provincial museums in France, constructed between 1855 and 1867 in the style of a Parisian palace. Napoleon III supported its creation, and the building itself was designed to rival the Louvre's galleries. The collection spans archaeology, medieval sculpture, and painting from the 16th century to the modern era.
The painting galleries feature Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, who created large decorative murals for the museum's staircase. His Work is among the monumental canvases here. The collection also includes Jean-Honoré Fragonard's charming The Cradle and pastels by Maurice Quentin de La Tour. After a major renovation, the museum reopened in 2019 with improved galleries and a contemporary art wing.
