The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims was established in 1794 and occupies the 18th-century Abbey of Saint-Denis, adjacent to Reims Cathedral. The collection was built from Revolutionary-era confiscations and Napoleonic transfers from the Louvre.
The museum holds a notable group of French 17th-century paintings and an extensive collection of landscapes. Twenty-seven Corot paintings make Reims one of the best places in France to study that artist's work. Jacques-Louis David's Death of Marat (one of several versions) is among the most celebrated holdings. The collection spans European art from the Renaissance through the 20th century.
