The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg was established on September 1, 1801, under Napoleon's Chaptal Decree, which distributed 800 artworks to 15 French cities. The museum occupies the first floor of the Palais Rohan, the former episcopal palace built between 1732 and 1742.
The collection of nearly 2,000 paintings covers European art from the 14th century to 1871, with strengths in Italian Renaissance, Spanish Baroque, and Flemish masters. A 1931 reorganization transferred the medieval Upper Rhenish works to the Musée de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame next door, letting each institution specialize. The Baroque palace setting adds period atmosphere to the galleries.
