The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie de Besançon, established in 1694, claims to be the oldest public museum in France. The collection originated with a donation of paintings and drawings by Abbot Jean-Baptiste Boisot to the Benedictines of Saint-Vincent.
Renovated and expanded in 1970 by architect Louis Miquel (a student of Le Corbusier), the museum holds European paintings from the Renaissance through the 19th century, alongside Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities. Bellini, Cranach, and Courbet (born nearby in Ornans) feature prominently. The archaeological collection spans from the Bronze Age through the Gallo-Roman period.
