The Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence was established in 1838 and named after the painter François Marius Granet, who donated his collection to the city. The museum occupies the former Priory of the Knights of Malta, a 17th-century building near the Palais de Justice.
The collection covers European art from the 14th through 20th centuries. In 2011, the museum received a transformative donation from the Planque Foundation: 300 works by Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Klee, and others, displayed in the nearby Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. The museum's connection to Cézanne, who was born in Aix, draws visitors, though the Cézanne studio on the hill above town holds more personal memorabilia.
