The Musée Ingres in Montauban was created in 1820 with civic donations, but gained its defining character when painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres bequeathed his personal collection to his hometown in 1867: 4,500 drawings, 44 paintings, a violin, and personal documents.
Later donations by sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, another Montauban native, further enriched the holdings. The basement contains Gallo-Roman archaeological finds and local history artifacts. Housed in a former bishop's palace overlooking the Tarn River, the museum connects two of France's most significant artists to their shared birthplace.
