The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours occupies the former Archbishop's Palace next to Tours Cathedral, a building with elements dating from the 4th through 18th centuries. The museum was established under the Chaptal Decree of 1801, with initial works transferred from the Louvre.
The collection covers European painting from the 14th through 20th centuries, with strengths in Italian Renaissance painting and 18th-century French art. Mantegna's Agony in the Garden and Resurrection of Christ are prized holdings. Rembrandt, Rubens, and Degas also feature. A magnificent cedar of Lebanon in the garden, planted in 1804, is itself a classified monument.
