The Museo Civico di Sansepolcro sits in the heart of this small Tuscan hill town, housed in the 14th-century Palazzo dei Conservatori. The museum exists because of one artist: Piero della Francesca, born here around 1415. His Resurrection, painted on the wall of the former town hall, is the main draw. Aldous Huxley called it "the greatest painting in the world," and during World War II, a British officer reportedly ordered a ceasefire on the town to protect it.
Beyond the Resurrection, the collection includes Piero's Madonna of Mercy polyptych, an early commission that took him over 15 years to finish. The museum also holds works by other Tuscan painters and local archaeological finds. Sansepolcro itself is worth the detour: a quiet town in the upper Tiber valley with medieval streets and very few tourists compared to Florence or Siena.
