The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica is split across two Roman palaces: Palazzo Barberini and Palazzo Corsini. Together they form Italy's national collection of paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries. Palazzo Barberini, a Baroque masterpiece designed by Bernini and Borromini, houses the larger portion. The ceiling fresco by Pietro da Cortona in the main hall is itself a reason to visit.
The painting collection includes Quentin Matsys's Portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Bronzino's refined Portrait of a Lady with a Puppy, and Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes. Nicolas Poussin and other French painters who worked in Rome are also well represented. Raphael's La Fornarina, a portrait of his lover, is one of the gallery's most popular works.
