Santa Maria sopra Minerva is Rome's only Gothic church, built over an ancient temple to Minerva near the Pantheon. The Dominican church, completed in 1370, houses Michelangelo's marble Risen Christ (1519-1520), standing to the left of the high altar.
The Carafa Chapel contains Renaissance frescoes by Filippino Lippi depicting the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The church is also the burial place of the painter Fra Angelico and of Catherine of Siena. Bernini's famous elephant obelisk stands in the piazza outside, designed in 1667 as the base for an ancient Egyptian obelisk.
