The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) is an ensemble of 15 museums holding roughly one million objects, rooted in the collection of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. The complex makes Dresden one of the most important museum cities in Europe.
The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister houses Raphael's Sistine Madonna, Giorgione's Sleeping Venus, and Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter. The Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) displays Europe's largest collection of treasury art. Other museums cover porcelain, arms, sculpture, prints, and ethnography.
