Adriaen van Ostade depicted a humble Dutch family gathered in their modest home. Parents and children occupy a rustic interior lit by filtered daylight, engaged in daily activities. Van Ostade's warm palette and careful observation give dignity to his peasant subjects.
Unlike some contemporaries who mocked rural folk, Van Ostade treated peasants with sympathetic humanity. His detailed rendering of textures and light effects demonstrate Dutch Golden Age mastery. This painting hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
