by Claude Monet
Claude Monet rendered this view of the Japanese footbridge over his water lily pond at Giverny. The arched bridge, draped in wisteria, curves over reflective water surrounded by lush vegetation. Monet painted this subject repeatedly as his eyesight declined, each version growing more abstracted.
By the time of his later bridge paintings, Monet's vision was affected by cataracts. The thickly applied paint and bold colors reflect both his fading sight and evolving artistic vision. This version is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
