British artist Ford Madox Brown painted this biblical scene showing Jacob receiving Joseph's bloodstained coat from his jealous brothers, who have sold Joseph into slavery and told their father he was killed by wild animals. Jacob's anguish dominates the composition as he clutches the evidence of his beloved son's apparent death.
Brown was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood though never an official member. His detailed, jewel-toned style and moral seriousness aligned with their ideals. This painting remains in a private collection.
