Italian artist Francesco Guardi painted this Nighttime Procession in Piazza San Marco in 1758, capturing a ceremonial event in Venice's most famous square. The oil on canvas measures 48 x 85 cm and shows torchlit figures moving through the darkness, their flames reflected in puddles on the pavement. The Basilica's facade looms in the background, barely visible in the nocturnal atmosphere.
Guardi (1712-1793) was among the last great practitioners of the Venetian School, specializing in vedute, or view paintings. His style differed from the precise architectural views of Canaletto, favoring instead a looser, more atmospheric approach. The soft golden glow of torchlight against blue-black shadows creates an almost theatrical effect.
The procession likely included the Doge and Patriarch of Venice, though identifying specific figures proves difficult in the flickering light. British collector Joseph Smith commissioned several works from Guardi during this period. The painting was later trimmed from its original size. It hangs at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
