by Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo executed this portrait of her boyfriend Alejandro Gómez Arias in 1928. The two had met in 1922 at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City and were inseparable for three years. Alejandro was with Frida on that fateful September afternoon in 1925 when the bus they were riding was struck by a trolley, leaving her severely injured while he escaped with minor wounds.
The work executed in a conventional portrait style similar to a photograph, contrasting with the Renaissance-influenced style of her earlier works. An inscription in the corner reads: "Alex, with affection I painted your portrait, that he is one of my comrades forever, Frida Kahlo, 30 years later." The work measures 61.5 x 41 cm in oil on wood.
Frida and Alejandro separated in June 1928, and she quickly turned her attention to Diego Rivera. The portrait remains in a private collection, though its authenticity has been questioned by some scholars.
