Joachim Patinir set this scene of St. Catherine's miracle within his characteristic sweeping landscape. The saint appears small against vast blue-green mountains and winding rivers, with rocky outcrops framing the religious narrative. Patinir pioneered the "world landscape" tradition, subordinating figures to panoramic views.
Patinir was the first Netherlandish artist to specialize in landscapes, though religious subjects provided the nominal justification. His distinctive aerial perspective creates dreamlike distances transitioning from brown foreground to blue horizon. Now at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
