French painter Maurice Denis painted this decorative landscape of the Brittany coast at Le Pouldu. Massive rocks rise from the sea rendered in flat, patterned colors typical of the Nabis group. Denis reduces the scene to rhythmic shapes, emphasizing the painting's surface over illusionistic depth.
Denis was a founding member of the Nabis and theorist of Post-Impressionism. His famous statement that a painting is "essentially a flat surface" informs this decorative approach. Currently in a private collection.
