by Otto Mueller
Otto Mueller completed this nude figures resting by the Moritzburg Lakes, a favorite retreat for Expressionist artists from Die Brücke. The scene shows bathers in natural harmony with their surroundings, rendered in Mueller's characteristic muted earth tones and simplified forms. His figures possess an angular grace distinct from academic nudes.
Mueller joined Die Brücke in 1910, and his interest in depicting humans integrated with nature aligned perfectly with the group's ideals. He favored tempera and distemper over oils, giving his work a matte, fresco-like quality. The Moritzburg Lakes near Dresden became a symbolic location where these artists could paint freely outdoors. This work hangs at the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg.
