by Paul Cézanne
French artist Paul Cézanne painted this double portrait around 1866, showing two of his close friends from Aix-en-Provence: the geologist Fortune Marion and the poet Antony Valabrègue. The work captures them posing informally, with thick, palette-knife brushstrokes typical of Cézanne's early "dark period."
Marion carries painting equipment while Valabrègue holds a hat, suggesting they're preparing for an outdoor excursion. The painting's heavy impasto technique and somber palette show the influence of Courbet and Delacroix on the young artist. Created when Cézanne was still developing his distinctive style, this intimate portrait hints at the bold experimentation that would later revolutionize modern art.
