by Paul Signac
French artist Paul Signac painted this Seine river scene using the Pointillist technique he developed alongside Georges Seurat. The clipper boat and industrial riverbank at Asnières dissolve into thousands of colored dots that blend optically when viewed from a distance. Blues and complementary oranges create vibrant luminosity.
Signac was a leading theorist and practitioner of Neo-Impressionism, applying scientific color theory to painting. Asnières, an industrial suburb northwest of Paris, was a favorite subject for avant-garde artists; Seurat painted his famous "Bathers at Asnières" nearby. This work is in a private collection.
