Petrus Christus completed this Portrait of a Carthusian in 1446, creating a landmark work of Northern Renaissance portraiture. The anonymous monk gazes directly at the viewer, bathed in intense light. A trompe-l'œil fly rests on the fictive frame, enhancing the illusion of reality.
Unlike Jan van Eyck's flat backgrounds, Christus places his subject in a warmly lit room corner. Light comes from multiple sources, meeting at the monk's white hood. The inscription declares "Petrus Christus made me in the year 1446." The painting measures 29.2 by 21.6 centimeters and resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
