by Raoul Dufy
Raoul Dufy rendered this maritime subjects throughout his career, drawing on his birthplace of Le Havre on France's Channel coast. This harbor view demonstrates the bold colors and rapid brushwork he developed after encountering Matisse's Luxe, Calme et Volupté at the 1905 Salon des Indépendants, which drew him toward Fauvism.
Dufy's port scenes capture boats, water, and sky with gestural strokes that suggest movement and light. Blue dominated his palette, it remained his favorite color throughout his life. The beach and harbor of Le Havre, flanked by jetties and the cliffs of Pays de Caux, provided settings for decades of experiments with color and atmosphere. His final years saw the "Black Cargo Ships" series, still exploring these themes. Dufy was also celebrated as a textile designer, printmaker, and decorator. This work shows his characteristic balance of observation and joyful improvisation.
